IN THE NEWS
The linear video industry lost 2.1 million subscribers in 1Q22, according to an estimate from MoffattNathanson, down 5.1% year-over-year. The report cited linear schedules that are not optimal for consuming unscripted/pre-recorded entertainment content; media companies shifting their best content from cable to direct-to-consumer platforms; and continued price increases. As a result, distributors “are now more ambivalent than ever about trying to retain video subscribers who are themselves increasingly ambivalent about lower and lower quality video services for which they are asked to pay higher and higher price,” said the report.
And here’s some food for thought for SVODs, courtesy of data from Global Wireless Solutions. Netflix lost 26% of its Gen Z female mobile users (aged 18-24) between 2019 and 2022, a larger decline than any other age group. Other key findings include:
· Mobile users are not just leaving Netflix but watching for less time, with minutes spent on the app falling by an average of 25% across all groups.
· Netflix saw a greater decline in its net promoter score (NPS) than any other major video streaming service.
· Despite Netflix’s decline, use of other major subscription streaming services has been growing among mobile users with a 10% increase across all age groups.
“Subscription based streaming services should think carefully about how they can continue to inspire younger audiences,” said Paul Carter, CEO, Wireless Solutions. “While these platforms can take comfort from the fact that consumers consistently declare mobiles as crucial devices for their consumption of video content, an increasingly competitive market will always mean consumers are attracted by the best content and the best service when streaming online.”
Paramount+ has ordered a limited series revival of “Criminal Minds.” The procedural ran on CBS from 2005-20, going on to become the most-streamed TV show in the US in 2021. Onboard are original cast members Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster.
CBS Television Stations is launching new “Now” branded newscasts for non-CBS affiliated stations it owns. The newscasts, which start rolling out July 18, will share production between stations in the group. In New York, the group will add “CBS News New York Now” at 9p on WLNY. Themed segments to be shared include topics like “Money Now” and “Health Now.” Earlier this year, CBS Television Stations announced it was creating a “news innovation lab.”
Spectrum Networks will launch its local news network, Spectrum News 1, on local broadcaster KAZD-TV in Dallas. Spectrum News 1’s local news programming, tailored specifically for Texans, will be simulcast on KAZD channel 55 while continuing to air on channel 1 for Spectrum TV customers, starting today, July 15.
BBC News, a merger of the BBC’s domestic and international news channels, is slated to launch in April 2023. The cost-cutting measure will mean 70 job cuts in London, but 20 new jobs created in Washington, DC. “Our aim is to create the best live and breaking video news service in the world – on our web pages, our apps, on BBC iPlayer and on our new TV news channel,” said BBC News Digital Director Naja Nielsen. “The way audiences consume news is changing.”
