The highly anticipated first fall scrimmage took place for head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas football program on Aug. 13. Texas took to the practice field on the Forty Acres on Aug. 13 to see which players could rise to the occasion and to start really figuring out some of the more important position battles ahead of the upcoming regular season.
Sark and the Longhorns staff got underway with the first fall practice on Aug. 13, with some very notable nuggets coming out of the festivities this weekend. From the sound of it, the Longhorns saw the defense really rise to the occasion this weekend.
It does look like the defense outshined the offense in this first fall scrimmage. After the Texas offense started to make some apparent strides in full-pads practice earlier this week, it looks like the defense took things back over on Aug. 13.
This will likely leave something to be desired for the offense, namely at the quarterback position, heading into the first complete week of full-pads practice.
Yet, there were definitely still some standouts worth shouting out for the Longhorns following the conclusion of the first fall scrimmage of camp on Aug. 13.

It’s really difficult to go through this list without at least mentioning how good Texas’ star junior running back Bijan Robinson was during the first fall scrimmage. But it also goes without saying that we expect Bijan to shine in these sorts of fall scrimmages, especially when he’s able to get some good pushes from the offensive line.
One of the few positives along the offensive line it seems, especially in pass protection, was the play of true freshman offensive tackle Kelvin Banks. The former five-star Summer Creek OT recruit continues to impress heading into the season.
It continues to sound like most of the positive reviews along the offensive line so far in fall camp are coming from this highly touted group of true freshmen. And Banks is the highlighting force amid that group of true freshmen in the trenches.
Among the more interesting takeaway from the first fall scrimmage was the fact that true freshman quarterback Maalik Murphy didn’t get many reps, but third-year signal-caller Charles Wright did. And it sounds like Wright was the quarterback that was at least the most efficient between him, redshirt freshman Quinn Ewers, and junior Hudson Card.
A nice return to hear from this first fall scrimmage this weekend was the flashes that the former Notre Dame Fighting Irish senior edge rusher transfer Ovie Oghoufo put on display. Oghoufo was apparently one of the more impressive of the projected starters along the defensive front, and he was effective in getting after the quarterback.
