Bangladesh clinched their fourth straight title of the Men’s AHF Cup with a 5-3 win in tiebreaker against Oman in the final at the Gelora Bung Karno Hockey Field (pitch-1) in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday.
The game was ended 1-1 in the stipulated 60 minutes where defender Shohanur Rahman Sobuj scored a field goal in the 14th minute for Bangladesh before Fahad Al Lawati equalised for Oman by scoring a field goal five minutes later.
In the penalty shootout, all the Bangladeshi shooters – defenders Sobuj, Farhad Ahmed Shetul, midfielders Roman Sarkar, Naim Uddin and forward Pushkor Khisha Mimo – converted their shots successfully.
Bangladesh keeper Biplob Kujur denied Mahmood Bait Shamaiaa fourth penalty after Rashad Al Fazari, Khalid Al Shaaibi and Ammaar Al Shaaibi converted their shots for Oman.
This was Bangladesh’s second win against Oman in this tournament as they earlier beat the upper-ranked side by 3-2 goals in their five-team Pool B final match on March 17 when defender Khorshadur Rahman struck a hat-trick for the winners.
To maintain their all-win strake in this nine-team tournament , Bangladesh earlier beat hosts Indonesia 7-2, Singapore 7-0 and Iran 6-2 in their other three pool games before routing Kazakhstan 8-1 in the second semi-final.
The Pool B runners-up Oman confirmed their final berth after a 2-1 win against four-team Pool A champions Sri Lanka.
Khorshad scored a total of nine goals, one goal less than the tournament’s top scorer Rashad Al Fazari of Oman, followed by another defender Ashraful Islam, who made two hat-tricks for Bangladesh, by scoring eight goals.
Earlier on March 19, both Bangladesh and Oman qualified for the next Asia Cup 2022 which will be held in May-June, by reaching the AHF Cup final and both the finalists joined automatic qualifiers – India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan and hosts Indonesia.
Earlier, Bangladesh clinched the titles in 2008, 2012 and 2016 editions of Asia’s second-tier hockey competition.
