Bangladesh hockey team finished runners-up in the nine-team Men’s Asian Games qualifiers tournament after a 2-6 loss against Oman in the final at the Queen Sirikit Commemorative Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday.
It was Bangladesh’s first loss at the international stage after their 10 consecutive wins since March 2022 as they won all the six games to lift the title of the Men’s AHF Cup in Jakarta before winning four games in this tournament.
Bangladesh bagged the Men’s AHF Cup title in March for the fourth straight time after beating Oman by 5-3 in tie-breaker after a 1-1 tie in the stipulated time of the nine-team tournament final in Jakarta.
Bangladesh also defeated the same side 3-2 in their Pool B match in the Men’s AHF Cup.
Including the day’s loss, Bangladesh and Oman encountered on 11 occasions since February 2013 with Bangladesh winning five games against six losses.
In the day’s final, Bangladesh were under immense pressure from the beginning and failed to score any goal in the first three quarters while Oman went up 4-0.
Bangladesh conceded three goals in the first quarter as Ammaar Al Shaaibi scored from the penalty corner in the fourth minute before Fahad Al Lawati and Salah Al-Saadi made it 3-0 by scoring one field goal each in the eighth and 10th minutes respectively.
Bangladesh tried hard and restricted Oman from scoring further in the second quarter before Asaad Mubarak Al Qasmi scored a field goal in the 34th minute to extend the lead 4-0.
It was an even fight in the final quarter when the FIH 29-ranked Bangladesh and the 23rd ranked Oman fired each other nets twice.
Bangladesh were back in the game when Ashraful Islam reduced the gap by scoring a field goal in the 48th minute while Oman’s Rashad Al Fazari extended the lead to 5-1 by scoring a field goal three minutes later.
Asama Al-Shibli scored Oman’s sixth in the 59th minute before Fazla Rabby pulled another goal back in the dying moments of the stipulated time.
The top six teams – Oman, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan – of the qualifiers will now join India, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Pakistan and China to play in the 12-team men’s hockey event of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
The bottom three teams of the qualifiers – Singapore, Hong Kong and Kazakhstan – failed to manage their berths for the Asian Games.
