Bangladesh finished sixth in the eight-team 2022 Men’s Asia Cup Hockey after a crushing 0-8 loss against three-time champions Pakistan in a place-deciding match at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday.
This was the third defeat in five games in this competition for Bangladesh, who never could manage a win against Pakistan in their previous five meetings at international stage since 2016.
Bangladesh made a frustrating start in the four-team Pool B with a 1-6 loss to South Korea and were back in semifinal-race with 2-1 win against Oman but were crushed 1-8 by Malaysia to place third in their pool.
Bangladesh beat hosts Indonesia 4-2 in a place-decider to keep their hopes alive for fifth place, which was finally shattered by Pakistan.
Malaysian coach Iman Gobinathan Krishnamurthy’s charges had a tight-schedule in the last three months as the clinched the 10-nation AHF Cup title with all-win record in March in Jakarta.
They earned 10 consecutive wins at international stage until Oman handed a 2-6 defeat in the nine-nation Asian Games 2022 qualifiers held in Thailand in May before moving to Jakarta again for Asia Cup.
