A series of popup initiatives are being developed at the market in Bridgend’s Rhiw Shopping Centre to create opportunities for business start-ups and micro-business to establish and grow.

The council hopes this will lead to greater footfall and dwell time in the market.
The project aims to not only makes spaces available, but to also help broker the process, with wraparound business support and advice, as well as some small grants to further assist business development.
One new entrepreneur taking part in the pop-up initiative Katrina Evans, said: “This is a great opportunity to develop my small business, and I am looking forward to trialling my products in front of a wider audience at Bridgend Indoor Market.
“I’m really grateful for the support I have received from the Pop Up Wales initiative, and I can’t wait to get Kat’s Wax, Wick and Wonders up and running.”
The pop-up initiative is thanks to a £120,000 funding package from the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund that the council is using to deliver its Bridgend Elevate and Prosper Project (EAP).

An additional £11,800 match funding has been received via the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns initiative, which is a Welsh Government programme providing support for the revitalisation of town centres in Wales.
Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Councillor Neelo Farr said: “This is exciting news for people in the county borough, and an excellent opportunity for start-up businesses and potential entrepreneurs to test out their business ideas in the marketplace.
“The level of financial support and advice offered through this initiative presents an ideal opportunity for individuals to establish an enterprise with very little outlay, offering the best chance of success while investing in and helping to nurture the local economy.”

Trudy Williams, aged 28 from the Nantyffyllon area of Maesteg died after her blue Hyundai was involved in a collision with a blue Renault Clio on the route between Nicholls Road and Bridgend Road.

Her family has paid tribute following their sudden and tragic loss: “Trudy was just an amazing person, she was kind, funny, thoughtful and beautiful inside and out. She lived an active life and was part of the Yr-Hen-Blwyf running club which played a massive part in her life. She volunteered for Rookwood Sound Radio in her spare time, which just tells you the type of person she was.
“She has touched so many people in so many ways. She was successful in almost everything she put her mind to and we know would have gone on to achieve so much more in life. Our loss and grief is just so raw but we are humbled by the outpouring of kind words and support from the community. We just want Trudy to be remembered for all the good she has done and she has left our hearts forever broken.
“Finally, as a family we want to thank all the emergency services and anyone else at scene who tried to help Trudy. We are so grateful for all your efforts”.

James Steven Daniel Gilheaney, 20, of Cae Garw, Kenfig Hill, Pyle, had pleaded not guilty at Swansea Magistrates Court before his trial on August 9th to illegally depositing controlled waste on land at Cae Garw Farm in February this year.

The dumped waste included flooring, insulation, rugs, a settee, glass patio doors and a cable and monitor.
Mr Gilheaney claimed he had been asked to ‘leave’ the waste at the location and to move it later.
At the conclusion of the trial, where still images and video footage from the cameras was shown, the District Judge said he found the defendant’s account incredible, before delivering his guilty verdict and sentencing Mr Gilheaney to a 12 month community order with 120 hours unpaid work, a £95 victim surcharge and £500 towards prosecution costs.
The District Judge also ordered the forfeiture of the transit van used to commit the offence and additionally disqualified Mr Gilheaney from driving for 12 months.
The court heard that cameras were placed in the area near Cae Garw, known to be used regularly for dumping waste, which was often then set alight.  When the recorded footage was later examined, officers identified Mr Gilheaney depositing the waste from the vehicle.

Cllr Scott Jones, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said: “I’d like to thank our officers for their painstaking work in this case. Fly-tipping is illegal and seriously damages our environment which is why I would appeal to anyone who sees fly-tipping to report it.”
Terri Harrison, a Dyfed Powys Police Sergeant, seconded to the Arson Reduction team Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service added, “Waste crime is a real challenge for MAWWFRS and partner agencies.  Every year there are reports of hundreds of refuse fires and we see a very clear and obvious link between refuse fires and fly tipping.
“Waste crime has a real adverse impact on the quality of life for those affected by the illegal activities.  It damages our environment, community and economy. Positive outcomes such as this send a clear message that we all work closely together and these activities will not be tolerated.”
