Crowds gathered to hear the reading of the Proclamation of King Charles III at Queen’s Park in Loughborough on Sunday, September 11.
The historic moment was witnessed by hundreds of people who attended the service at the Carillon Tower.
The Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Jennifer Tillotson, read the proclamation before the crowd were invited to say God Save the King, sing the national anthem and give three cheers for the King.
Cllr Tillotson said: “This was a historic and significant occasion for Charnwood. Most of us have only ever known the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and it was an honour to be involved in reading the Proclamation of our new monarch, King Charles III.
“The nation is in mourning for the Queen but this was an opportunity to recognise the ascension of King Charles III. On behalf of the borough, I would like to welcome his reign.
“I would also like to thank everyone who took part in the service and to all those who attended. It was respectful, poignant and a good opportunity for people to come together in what is a reflective moment for our country.”
The service was opened by Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire Dr Nik Kotecha OBE who told the crowd: “We gather here for this latest reading of the Proclamation of the Accession of our new King, Charles III. This is an ancient tradition but unique in our lifetime.”
Dr Kotecha said afterwards: “It was a tremendous privilege to be involved in the Proclamation service in Loughborough and it was a fitting occasion to welcome our new King.”
Before the service, the Carillon played music as the crowds began to gather. Local dignitaries including the Mayor, Charnwood Borough Council Leader Jonathan Morgan, Charnwood borough councillors, freeman and alderman of the borough, local faith leaders, and representatives from Loughborough University, Loughborough College and the emergency services.
The dignitaries formed a procession which entered the park and made its way to the Carillon Tower for the service. The procession made its way out of the park along New Street after the service.

The Union flag was flown at mast-head to mark the Proclamation over Saturday and Sunday before being returned to half-mast in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.
Books of Condolence have been opened at Charnwood Borough Council’s offices in Loughborough and at Loughborough Town Hall. The Books of Condolence will remain open until 5pm on the day following The Queen’s funeral. The Council offices are closed at weekends but the town hall will be open and the books will be available to sign.
