The Georgia Bulldogs turned heads this summer when they broke out all-white uniforms for prospects to show off on several recruiting weekends. The new look for the Bulldogs raised plenty of questions, some Georgia head coach Kirby Smart tried to answer them last week.
Smart was asked about Georgia’s all-white uniforms at SEC Media Days and gave his perspective on what the look brings to the program. Smart explained the reason for having them is obvious, and while he doesn’t anticipate his players sporting that look on the field anytime soon, the head coach made it clear how important it was to never say never.
“I mean, you do it because you want the guys to be excited about changing uniforms and taking pictures. They want different looks. Oregon’s kind of been the team to go out with five or six uniforms,” Smart said. “To say it would never happen would be foolish. I don’t think never is in the vocabulary for anything. We’re open to looking at different things and exploring different options. But it’s not imminent.”
Smart’s comments last week fit right in with a report from the AJC in June, which said the all-white uniforms were ordered specifically for recruiting visits.
Georgia typically sticks with its traditional uniform combinations with very few exceptions. The Bulldogs haven’t worn their black jerseys since November 2020, when Georgia broke out the alternate look for a home game against Mississippi State and later wore them in the 2021 Peach Bowl against Cincinnati. Aside from the black jersey look, the last time the Bulldogs really mixed things up was in 2011, when Georgia wore Nike Pro Combat uniforms for its season opener against Boise State.
While white uniforms aren’t in the future for the Bulldogs at this point, the team will have some significant changes this fall. Georgia is switching back to block jersey numbers this season, a decision that was announced back in April. Last week, astute Georgia fans got a look at what the numbering on the new uniforms will look like when wide receiver Kearis Jackson posted a video with the jerseys in the background.

Georgia used the traditional block lettering until 2013, when the team switched to a font that was called “Bulldog Bold” that Nike created for University of Georgia athletic teams.
“Our iconic look is Herschel [Walker], it’s Jake Scott, it’s [Frank] Sinkwich. The uniform has changed a lot from Charley Trippi and Frank Sinkwich to Knowshon Moreno, but there’s one thing we’ve always had: block numbers,” 1990s-era Georgia student manager Carter McInnis told ESPN in 2013.
“Number fonts do go with the team. The Chicago Bears have always had that rounded number. If you look at a Chicago Bears jersey and you know that’s a Bears jersey because they have rounded numbers. That’s their look. For us, I’m not a fan of it. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, they’re growing on me, and I understand the whole iconography with Nike and the word marks being the same font. I just think why mess with it.”
This fall, the Bulldogs are returning to tradition.
