Jay Shah, president of Asian Cricket Council (ACC), on Tuesday (August 2), announced the schedule of the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. As announced earlier, the fifteenth edition of the continental championship will commence from August 27 and finish on September 11.
Asia Cup is making a return after a gap of four years. The previous edition was played in 2018 in the UAE when India beat Bangladesh in the final to win a record-extending seventh Asia Cup title. A total of six teams will be participating in the forthcoming tournament. Asia Cup 2022 will be played in the T20 format, thus giving the teams the opportunity to prepare for this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
The five Test playing nations of the continent- India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh along with the winner of the qualifying tournament will take part in Asia Cup 2022. The six teams have been divided into group of three.
Asia Cup 2022 will kickstart on August 27 with a game between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Dubai. India, on the other hand, will open their campaign on the next day with the mouthwatering clash against arch-rivals Pakistan. India and Pakistan have been placed in Group A along with the Qualifier while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan have been placed in Group B.
The tournament will be held in Dubai and Sharjah. Asia Cup 2022 was originally scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka. But the ACC were compelled to change the venue due to the political unrest in Sri Lanka. And while the tournament will be held in UAE, Sri Lanka Cricket will serve as the hosts of the marquee tournament.
Announcing the schedule, Shah wrote: The wait is finally over as the battle for Asian supremacy commences on 27th August with the all-important final on 11th September.
“The 15th edition of the Asia Cup will serve as ideal preparation ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup,” he added.
